When a mixture of glucose and fructose is ingested, there is less competition for intestinal absorption compared to the ingestion of an isoenergetic amount of glucose or fructose, which involves two different intestinal transporters. Furthermore, fructose absorption is stimulated by the presence of glucose. This increases carbohydrate absorption to 120 g/h instead of the normal 60 g.
