The Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37; Nike’s oldest running shoe model can add another dash behind its name. The Pegasus is a well-known shoe in the running world and is often quoted as “Nike’s best selling running shoe” and “Nike’s most popular running shoe”. These new editions have undergone quite a metamorphosis. Is “the Peg” still recognisable in more than just its name? What is familiar and what is new? In this blog we will take a closer look at the new Pegasus 37.

The Pegasus was introduced in 1983. Every year since, Nike has adapted the popular model according to the feedback from its users. The Pegasus design revolves around three core elements: agility, speed and making miles. Combine those three and you have the Pegasus; a workhorse with wings. The Zoom Air unit made its debut in the first Pegasus model. Today, this technology is a core element of many Nike shoes. This Zoom Air unit is also found in the new Pegasus 37; it is has been adapted a little though.

Tireless Workhorse

The Pegasus model has been around for an astonishing 37 years. Few other models have achieved this. The Pegasus has always been famous for its accessibility and comfortable running experience. It’s an excellent everyday trainer, a reliable running shoe for each and every day. The new Nike Air Zoom Pegasus 37 has received a major face-lift. Don’t let that scare you though; some of its famed and familiar elements have been carefully preserved in these new models. Take for instance the distinctive heel counter that angles away from the Achilles. A feature that is the result of the direct feedback given by many runners, athletes and other Pegasus fans. The outsole with its iconic waffle pattern is also featured in the new Pegasus. This provides you with the grip and durability expected from a pair of Pegs.

Fast Galloping

In short, we can state that the new Pegasus 37 has become more energetic. A workhorse, motivated by an extra crack of the whip. The famous Zoom Air unit is also seen in these 37th versions. It, however, isn’t a full-length Zoom Air unit like in the Pegasus 36. The Pegasus 37 only features the Zoom Air unit in the forefoot. Your push off comes from your forefoot, making it the perfect place for that extra bit of energy return. The Zoom Air unit under the forefoot is twice as thick in these new versions as it was in those of its predecessor. This gives you a higher energy return and a more responsive feel, especially during take-off. The model has also become more gender specific. The pressure in the Zoom Air unit differs between men and women, so that both men and women can experience the best possible energy return.

Let’s React

The predecessor of the 37th editions featured a Cushlon foam midsole. These new version include a React foam midsole. There is also proportionally more foam added to the midsole. The React cushioning material gives a softer running feel, but is also a lot more responsive than the Cushlon foam. Yet another advantage of the foam is that it’s much more durable, which makes the running shoes a lot more resistant to wear. A daring move. Where one might receive the React midsole with open arms, the other may more appreciate the traditional feel of the Cushlon midsole. Finally, the new Pegasus 37 includes a new transparent Mesh upper. This upper features a midfoot band that adapts itself to the size of your foot to ensure a personalized and locked down feel.

Your Trusted Winged Horse

Half running shoe, half air. A combination of that familiar feeling of a good, established running shoe and a light, springy feeling thanks to its innovative design.

The look and feel of the Pegasus is somewhat influenced by the success of Nike’s faster running shoes. The upper of the new Pegasus 37 reminds us of the redesigned upper of the Nike Zoom Pegasus Turbo 2, while the midsole is more like that of the Nike Zoom Fly 3. Bidding farewell to the traditional Cushlon foam and adding the React foam to the midsole of the model is a bold step which might not be welcomed by Pegasus purists. It does, however, modernise the model up to todays standards; it gives the shoes a softer and more responsive feeling. Pegasus purists might eagerly emphasise the lack of stability because of this change. The newly added midfoot band will give back some of this lost stability though. All in all, the new Pegasus 37 lives up to its name as a trustworthy daily trainer which is suitable for a wide range of runners.
