Welcome to the Forerunner family
The Garmin Forerunner collection is made for runners and other passionate athletes such as cyclists, swimmers and multi-sport athletes. These watches distinguish themselves from other brands by the extra features such as music (via Spotify premium), navigation (only on the Forerunner 955) and Garmin Pay. In addition to these features, the Forerunner family is known for its accurate GPS, comprehensive running statistics and insights into sleep and recovery ability. Thus, you become not only a better athlete, but also a more balanced human.
The Garmin Forerunner collection consists of the Forerunner 55, 245, 255, 745, 945 and 955. The Forerunner 55 is aimed at the starting runner, while the Forerunner 745 is made for triathletes and fanatical runners. The big difference between the 745 and 955 is the ability to navigate with full colour maps.
What new features does Garmin bring with both the Forerunner 255 and 955?
Garmin introduces new features in the form of GPS, training guidance, health, recovery and activity profiles. The GPS accuracy has been improved by the new GPS receiver using two frequencies by satellite. This makes the GPS more accurate in crowded cities and wooded environments among others. Both watches have the features below:
- HRV stress. This keeps track of heart rate variation while you sleep, giving you more insight into overall health, recovery and training.
- Running Power (running on power). You must wear the heart rate belt (HRM-PRO) or Running Dynamics Pod for this. With power training you can train more efficiently and run competitions.
- Garmin Pay. This allows you to do contactless payments.
- Triathlon function. Not only are your sports times tracked, but also your change times.
- Race Widget. This widget offers training tips and daily workouts and racing predictions for your next race. The app does this based on the race route, performance data, fitness data, weather data and more.
What is the difference between the Forerunner 245 and 255?
The Garmin Forerunner 255 is the successor of the Forerunner 245. The big difference between these devices among other things is the battery life. It has been improved to 14 days in smartwatch mode and up to 30 hours in GPS mode (versus 7 days/24 hours on the FR245). The beauty is that the triathlon function has been added and Garmin Pay as well. But that’s not all. Additional features that have been added:
- Small version. The Forerunner 255 is now also available in a S variant, which is suitable for runners with a small wrist (wrist circumference 110-175mm).
- Running Power (running on power).
- Morning Report. This gives a short overview of night rest, recovery time, training status, HRV status and daily workouts.
- Compare the intensity of your recent training with the optimal range.
What is the difference between the Forerunner 945 and 955?
The Garmin Forerunner 955 is the successor of the Forerunner 945. This watch is known as the sports watch for triathletes and fanatical athletes who want to measure and know everything. In short, this is the watch for the Forerunner’s “goal seekers” and “data freaks” The Forerunner 955 is now equipped with touchscreen, solar-powered charging and more. These are the extra features:
-
- Real-time stamina. See what’s left in the tank and distribute your energy optimally during training and competitions.
- Training readiness. This feature provides insight into when you need to train. Maybe a day of extra rest is a good choice or an intensive interval training.
- Improvement of training status. This status indicates whether you train too little or too much.
Why choose the 955 instead of the 255?
Choose the Garmin Forerunner 955 if you want more insight in training and especially planning your training. In addition, the Forerunner 955 helps to dose your energy during trainings and races thanks to the Real-time Stamina feature. As an additional feature, the 955 also has full-colour maps for navigation, touchscreen, solar charging and longer battery life (42 hours versus 30 hours in GPS mode).
